Pop-up menus enable more efficient interface operation. Inspired from empirical inference, observation, and literature reviews, this study investigated the operation efficiency of pop-up menus through examining human’s superior physical characteristics of visual search and mouse movement. A new style of menu type, Elliptic-Pie Menu, was proposed and examined on operation efficiency against traditional linear menus and (circular) pie menus while different item lengths were also analyzed. The study revealed: (1) Menu type is a significant factor of the operation efficiency; (2) Short items turn out to be more efficient than long items do; (3) Linear Menu presents the highest operation efficiency, whereas Circular-Pie Menu delivers the lowest error rate; (4) Elliptic-Pie Menu occurs significant improvement of operation efficiency with the use of short items.
Explore Consumers’ Requirements of Comfortable Chairs through Interactive Genetic Algorithm

In the research of Human Factors Engineering, comfort of seating is defined by scientific measurements such as pressure, force and Electromyography (EMG) signal. This paper proposed a method of exploring consumers’ requirements of comfortable coffee chairs using Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) processing where consumers evaluated their preferences. The research found some preferences coincided with Human Factors Engineering theory. On the contrary, some were opposite. Furthermore, there were preferences not addressed in theory of Human Factors Engineering. Hence, IGA would not only help to explore consumers’ requirements, but also provide designers with further concern while designing comfortable coffee chairs.
A General Scheme for Extracting QR Code from a Non-uniform Background in Camera Phones and Applications

With the rapid advances in mobile communication technologies, QR code in the embedded camera devices has been used as new input interfaces. However, the previous works for extracting QR code from an image do not consider a non-uniform background. In this paper, we implement the applications of QR code and propose an efficient algorithm to extract QR code from the non-uniform background. In contrast with prior works, our approach is of higher accuracy for QR-code recognition and more practical for use in a mobile information environment.
